There are 5 City Commissioners, with 4 serving a designated ward and the 5th commissioner serving as an "at-large" commissioner without a defined ward.

The Mayor of Nowata is an elected City Commissioner which was then selected by their fellow commissioners to serve as the City's mayor.

The day-to-day operations of the City of Nowata are ran by the City Manager.

Elected in 2023, Mayor Garry Gibson became the City of Nowata's first African-American mayor.
